More Than a Grocery Store.
A Community Anchor.
Since December 2021, Superior Street Mercantile has been serving fresh food, building relationships, and helping revitalize the heart of downtown Albion, Michigan.
Born from a Belief in Albion
It started with a simple observation: downtown Albion, a community full of character and resilience, deserved a real grocery store. Not just a convenience shop, but a proper neighborhood market where families could buy fresh produce, quality meats, craft beverages, and everyday essentials, all in one place, right in the heart of their community.
Superior Street Mercantile opened its doors in December 2021. From day one, we weren't just selling groceries. We were making a statement: downtown Albion is worth investing in. The community responded with overwhelming warmth, and that energy has carried us every day since.
"We're more than a grocery store: we're a hub for exceptional products and local flavor."
Our founders understood that food access is about more than convenience. For many families in Albion, having a quality grocery store within walking distance (one that accepts Visa/Mastercard, that carries fresh produce at fair prices, that treats every customer with genuine respect) is transformative. That's the store we set out to build.
Today, Superior Street Mercantile carries hundreds of products across five departments: fresh fruits and vegetables, hand-cut meats, craft beer and wine, bulk snacks, and made-fresh daily grab-and-go items. We source from Michigan farms and producers wherever we can, because supporting local businesses is part of who we are.
We've served thousands of customers, built a loyal community of Loyalty Club members, and watched neighbors become friends. The work of revitalizing downtown Albion isn't finished, but we're proud to be part of it, one storefront, one shopping cart, one perfectly ripe peach at a time.
Our Core Values
Fresh, Local, Quality
We source from Michigan farms and producers first. When local isn't possible, we choose quality. Every product on our shelves passes our personal standard: if we wouldn't serve it at our own table, it doesn't go on yours.
Genuine Community Service
We know our customers by name. We carry items our neighbors ask for. We accept Visa/Mastercard because we believe fresh, quality food is a right, not a luxury. Service isn't a policy here; it's a value we live by every shift.
Albion, First and Always
We chose downtown Albion on purpose. We believe in this community's future and we put our investment where our belief is. Every dollar spent here stays in the local economy and helps build a stronger Albion for everyone.
More Than Groceries
Opening Superior Street Mercantile was never just a business decision. It was a commitment to downtown Albion: to be a dependable, welcoming presence that serves the whole community, regardless of income, background, or transportation access.
πΏ Addressing Food Access
For many Albion residents without reliable transportation, having a full-service grocery store within walking distance of downtown is genuinely life-changing. We ensure that everyone, regardless of their means of getting around, has access to fresh, wholesome food. We accept Visa/Mastercard and keep prices fair.
ποΈ Revitalizing Downtown
When a neighborhood gets a quality anchor business, it signals that the area is worth investing in. Our presence on Superior Street has helped attract foot traffic and renewed energy to downtown Albion. We're proud to be one of the businesses leading that revitalization effort.
π€ Supporting Local Producers
We actively partner with Michigan farms, breweries, and artisan food producers. By featuring locally-made products, we create a circular economy that strengthens the region: your grocery purchase supports a Michigan family farm, not a corporate distributor.
π Building Real Relationships
Our Loyalty Club now has hundreds of members. We know our regulars. We remember preferences. We celebrate birthdays. That's not a marketing strategy. It's just how we think a neighborhood store should operate. Community doesn't scale; it's built one relationship at a time.
Come See for Yourself
We're open seven days a week in the heart of downtown Albion. Stop in, say hello, and find out why your neighbors are already regulars.
